Independent Study

All HESD students have been scheduled for in-person instruction for the 2021-2022 school-year.  However, parents/guardians may opt to enroll their student(s) in HESD’s Independent Study Program. 
To enroll in HESD Independent Study: 

  1. Call your student’s school-site to request a pre-enrollment conference 
    1. Conference will include:
      1. Review of HESD Independent Study Master Agreement
      2. Review of components of HESD Independent Student Program
        1. Access to live instruction:
          1. TK-3rd grade students will meet daily for scheduled live instruction for a specified amount of time (live instruction may take place via video conferencing or in-person).
          2. 4th-8th grade students will be provided daily live interaction (daily live interaction may include phone calls, emails, or video conferencing, and may be conducted by the teacher or other designated staff).
          3. 4th-8th grade students will meet once per week for scheduled live instruction for a specified amount of time (live instruction may take place via video conferencing or in-person). 
        2. Assignments and required instructional minutes:
          1. For all grades, TK-8th, the supervising teacher will assign work determined to be equivalent in time value to daily minimum day instructional minutes. Work completion and submission is required.
            1. TK-K:  180 minutes per day
            2. 1st-3rd:  230 minutes per day 
            3. 4th-8th:  240 minutes per day
        3. Equivalent instruction:
          1. Independent study teachers and students will adhere to the same pacing and assessment system as in-person students
          2. Independent study students will be provided with the same core instructional materials and devices as in-person students.
        4. Disenrollment/reenrollment information:
          1. Parents may disenroll their student from HESD Independent Study, and the student will be transitioned to the in-person setting within 5 days. 
          2. Parents may re-enroll their student into HESD Independent Study by following the Independent Study enrollment process. 
          3. The district will conduct an evaluation of “whether independent study is the best for the student” when:
            1. A student misses 5 assignments in a trimester
            2. The supervising teacher determines lack of participation in live instruction or interactions 
            3. The supervising teacher determines lack of learning progress or determines a student to be academically at-risk of failure
