HESD C.A.R.E.S. Program

The McKinney-Vento Act was defined as homelessness such as “lacking a fixed, Stable, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. Our program seeks to identify students and families that are in transition and offers support to help address social, emotional, and academic needs.

Foster youth automatically receive  HESD C.A.R.E.S services and have the right to remain at their school of origin if it is in the student’s best interest.

HESD C.A.R.E.S has 3 school social workers that are assigned to all temporarily housed and foster youth students enrolled in Hanford Elementary School District.

HESD C.A.R.E.S Services

• Referrals to Community Resources (Clothing, food, shelter, housing assistance, health related services, etc.)
• School Supplies
• Transportation Assistance
• Individual/Group Counseling
• Case Management
• Parent Education
• Funding for extracurricular activities (i.e. equipment/uniforms for sports)

 

Foster/Homeless students have a right to attend and receive a free appropriate public education. The HESD C.A.R.E.S Program, can assist you with the following rights:

• Foster/Homeless students cannot be kept out of school if you lack required documentation for enrollment.
• If you lack permanent housing, a “supplemental form” should be completed upon enrollment where you indicate your current housing status.
• Student has the right to remain at the school of origin. If student is homeless, they have the right to remain until the end of the school year.
• If you do not agree with the school placement of your child, you can file a dispute form.
• Transportation assistance is available when the student resides outside of their school of origin boundaries.
